Estimating: Show children a jar filled with Halloween inspired objects and let them guess how many objects are in the jar. Then have the children help you to count the objects.

Pumpkin Seed Graph

Read the book: “Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie” Jill Esbaum

Materials needed: 3 pumpkins of different sizes, pumpkin knife, large spoons, 3 trays, poster board.

Directions: Purchase 3 pumpkins of three different sizes. Let the children help you open the top of each pumpkin. Set each pumpkin on its own tray. Let the children clean out all the seeds from each pumpkin. Have the children (with help) count out the seeds from each pumpkin and make a graph with the poster board. Take pictures for the graph poster board.

Fun: Clean the seeds and bake them for a treat!

Counting with Pumpkins

Counting with pumpkins: For beginners, number a sheet of paper 1-5 or higher, in order, across the bottom of a sheet of paper. For children more familiar with numbers but need reinforcement, write numbers across the bottom of the paper in random order. Have the child use an orange paint dabber or other small circular object or finger dipped in paint or ink to make pumpkins in the correct amount above each number. Then, have the child decorate the pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns if they want to.

Sorting and Organizing Pumpkins

Sort/organize pumpkins and gourds in a row from big to small.

Measure pumpkins and gourds with a piece of yarn and then measure the yarn with a ruler or yard stick to see which one has the largest circumference.
