Paper Plate Pumpkin (Mask)

Supplies Needed; Toilet paper roll, green construction paper, green pipe cleaner, black pen, orange paint, a black pen, scissors, and glue.

Directions;
Cut out the center of your plate, and paint it orange. Cut a leaf shape, from your green construction paper, and draw on leaf lines as desired. Glue pieces together (as seen above).

Halloween Service Project

The children filled bags full of candy, cereal bars, applesauce, hot cocoa, and other yummy treats to give to a family with 7 children that are unable to go out trick-or-treating.

Humbug Witch

Supplies:

Book Humbug Witch by Lorna Balian
Paper
Colored pencils or crayons

Instructions: Cover the front of the book. Tell the children you will be reading them a book about a witch and they cannot see the pictures. Tell the children that they will be drawing the witch as you read the book. Read each description of the witch slowly and pause between each description to give the children time to process and draw. Once the drawings are completed show the children the cover of the book. Discuss the similarities and differences between their pictures and the book. Read the book from the beginning and then discuss the ending with the children.

Fall Pasta Sensory

Supplies:

Cooked pasta
Plastic bags
Food coloring
water
sensory table or bin

Instructions: Rinse cooked paste in cold water. Add 20 drops of food coloring to ½ cup of water in plastic bag. Add pasta and mix around until desired color is reached. Rinse pasta again. Complete this process for each of the colors you want. Place pasta in sensory table and let children play.

*The children had Halloween on their mind and decided that the colored pasta was:

red = brains
yellow = scarecrow parts
orange = pumpkin guts
brown = worms
purple = witch’s hair

I wrote down the children’s descriptions and we will use their descriptions to create Halloween stories later this week.

Halloween Math Ideas

Estimating: Show children a jar filled with Halloween inspired objects and let them guess how many objects are in the jar. Then have the children help you to count the objects.

Number Writing Practice: Create numbers using candies.

Patterns: Give children materials to create patterns such as AB patterns.

Marshmallow Mummy and Ghost

Reading options:
Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex – A wonderfully illustrated book about a goon that ties to run amok and prevent rest when a little werewolf tries to settle down for the night.

The Runaway Mummy: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex – This book has great illustrations that help tell the story of a little mummy changing forms to run away from his mother.

Supplies:

marshmallows
glue
paper with outline of mummy and/or ghost
optional: google eyes

Instructions: Glue marshmallows onto the mummy to create the wrap on the mummy. Glue marshmallows along the outline of the ghost. Add google eyes.

Pumpkin Pie Playdough

Supplies:

5 1/2 cups flour
2 cups of salt
8 teaspoons of cream of tartar
3/4 cup oil
1 small container of Pumpkin Pie Spice
4 cups of water
Optional: red and yellow food coloring (1 part red to 2 parts yellow)
Large pot
Wooden spoon or something similar
Optional: Fall or Halloween cookie cutters

* This recipe makes a big batch of play-dough! We cut the recipe in half and had plenty

Instructions:
In the large pot add all ingredients and mix together. Cook over medium heat, stir until the mixture no longer has any lumps. Remove the dough from the pot and place on a well-floured surface. Knead the dough out until smooth. The dough can now be played with. When done playing with the dough, store it in an air tight container or sealable freezer bag.
