Paper Plate Pumpkin (Mask)

Supplies Needed; Toilet paper roll, green construction paper, green pipe cleaner, black pen, orange paint, a black pen, scissors, and glue.

Directions;
Cut out the center of your plate, and paint it orange. Cut a leaf shape, from your green construction paper, and draw on leaf lines as desired. Glue pieces together (as seen above).

Marshmallow Mummy and Ghost

Goodnight Goon: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex – A wonderfully illustrated book about a goon that ties to run amok and prevent rest when a little werewolf tries to settle down for the night.

The Runaway Mummy: A Petrifying Parody by Michael Rex – This book has great illustrations that help tell the story of a little mummy changing forms to run away from his mother.

Supplies:

marshmallows
glue
paper with outline of mummy and/or ghost
optional: google eyes

Instructions: Glue marshmallows onto the mummy to create the wrap on the mummy. Glue marshmallows along the outline of the ghost. Add google eyes.

Painting with Licorice

Supplies

Licorice
Paint
Paper

Instructions:
Have children use licorice as a paintbrush. Let them be creative with the licorice and how they want to use it as a paintbrush.

Skittles Paint

Supplies:

Skittles
Corn syrup
5 Small containers
Paintbrushes
Your favorite paint paper

Instructions:
Have children sort the Skittles by color into the separate containers. The more Skittles you have the brighter the color (we used 20-25 Skittles per color).

Next, have the children pour corn syrup over the Skittles, covering them completely.

Let the children observe each container and discuss any changes they see. Place the containers in a safe place and let them sit for several hours. Stir each color.

Have the children smell each container and discuss the scents. Use paintbrushes to paint the Skittles paint onto the paint paper.

This paint will be very thick! If you want thinner paint you can thin the paint out by sticking the containers in a warm bath of water (we placed the paint containers into a baking dish with warm water).

The painting will need to dry over night and will look glossy.

Stamping with Cookie Cutters

Supplies:

Washable Paint
Paper (we used colored cardstock)
Cookie cutters
Optional: glitter

Instructions: Put a small amount of paint on a paper plate, pie plate, cookie sheet or other washable flat surface and spread the paint out. Dip cookie cutters into paint and stamp paper. If you want to add some sparkle to your stamping sprinkle some glitter onto the wet paint.

Halloween Inspired Hand & Finger Print Painting

Supplies:

Washable Paint
Paper (we used colored cardstock)
Hands and fingers
Optional: paintbrushes

Instructions: Press hands or fingers into paint and stamp paper with them to create Halloween inspired paintings. * Could use a paintbrush to apply paint to hands and fingers.

Edible Haunted House

Supplies:

Graham crackers
Frosting
Food coloring
Assorted selection of candies,
pretzels, crackers, etc
Paper plate
Plastic knife

Instructions: Use food coloring to tint frosting to desired colors. Apply frosting to the edges of the graham crackers and create a house structure. There is no right or wrong way to do this! Use the frosting to stick the candies or other edible objects to the house to create a one-of-a-kind haunted house.

Warning: Children will want to sample the supplies often, have plenty of supplies on hand!! Don't be alarmed if younger children have houses that look flat.. all their building supplies must have disappeared before the house had a chance to get built!

Older children in 2nd grade or above, (as this book may scare younger children), may enjoy having the story Five Haunted Houses by Judith Bauer Stamper and Illustrated by Tim Raglin read to them as they build their haunted houses.

Five Haunted Houses is a book with five different spooky stories about haunted houses.

Spider Hands

Simple Version: Trace children's hands back to back on black construction paper. Then have them cut it out and glue on eye balls.
Messy Version: Have children dip the palms of their hands in black paint. Then have them press the black paint onto white construction paper with their hands back to back. Allow them cut out their hand prints and then glue on eyes.

Felt Pumpkins

Have children cut out a pumpkin, stem, and a face out of felt to make their own Jack-O-Lantern. Or you can pre-cut the pieces with extra pieces so that the children can make different faces.
