Rosa Parks Lesson Plan

It was on December 1, 1955 that Rosa made her famous stand (while sitting) on the bus. Rosa had settled in her seat on the bus after a hard days work. All the seats on the bus had filled up when a white man boarded. The bus driver told Rosa and some other African-Americans to stand up. Rosa refused. The bus driver said he would call the police. Rosa didn't move. Soon the police showed up and Rosa was arrested.

Make Your Own Bus

Supplies Needed;

• Egg carton
• Yellow paint
• Paintbrush
• Construction paper
• Assorted recycled/household materials (bottle caps, pieces of fabric, etc.)
• Photograph of Rosa Parks, your child, and friends or classmates
• Scissors
• Glue

Directions;

1. Cut the lid off of an old egg carton. This will be the school bus. Have your little ones paint the entire lid yellow.
2. Help them draw and cut out the people and items from the list. They can make some items from different household materials, such as a bottle cap for a steering wheel. Encourage Them to think of what objects they would like to use for each item. This is a great chance for them to use their creativity!
3. Have them glue the items on different spots around the inside of the bus.
4. Help them cut out Rosa Parks's photo, their own picture and photos of friends or family. Have them glue Rosa Parks int he front of their bus, and everyone else anywhere they want on the bus.
