Presidential Proclamation -- Women's History Month

3/31/2014

March is Women's History Month.

Throughout our Nation's history, American women have led movements for social and economic justice, made groundbreaking scientific discoveries, enriched our culture with stunning works of art and literature, and charted bold directions in our foreign policy. They have served our country with valor, from the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to the deserts of Iraq and mountains of Afghanistan. During Women's History Month, we recognize the victories, struggles, and stories of the women who have made our country what it is today.

This month, we are reminded that even in America, freedom and justice have never come easily. As part of a centuries-old and ever-evolving movement, countless women have put their shoulder to the wheel of progress -- activists who gathered at Seneca Falls and gave expression to a righteous cause; trailblazers who defied convention and shattered glass ceilings; millions who claimed control of their own bodies, voices, and lives. Together, they have pushed our Nation toward equality, liberation, and acceptance of women's right -- not only to choose their own destinies -- but also to shape the futures of peoples and nations........

Frida Kahlo Lesson Plan

3/4/2014

Picture
Frida Kahlo de Rivera was a Mexican artist best known for her self-portraits. Many classify Frida as a surrealist but she claimed that she did not paint dreams but her painful reality. When Frida was 13 years old, she was on a bus that crashed into a trolley car. The young girl spent 3 months in a full body cast and although she completely recovered from the accident and regained her ability to walk, she spent most of her life in pain. She began painting to occupy her time while she was bed-ridden. She combined elements of Mexican and Amerindian mythology, dramatic symbolism, and a primitive perspective.

Make Your Own Airplane

Picture

What You Will Need
Wooden Clothes Pins
Skinny Popsicle Sticks (Regular and Short Length)
Paint in your choice of colors
Paint brushes
Glue (Elmer’s or Hot Glue Gun)

How to Make It
There are two ways you can go about the painting of the clothes pins and popsicle sticks.  If your child is old enough, let them do the painting.  If you have a smaller child, go ahead and pre-paint your items using bright colors.  Be sure to use different colors for the clothes pins and the popsicle sticks.  Then set them aside and let them dry.

You will want to glue your two longer popsicle sticks on the top and bottom of your clothes pin near the metal joint.  Then glue your shorter stick near the back of the clothes pin on the top side.  Let your child be involved with this.  If the wings are a little crooked, it’s OK – it simply gives your plane character:-)

Once all your “wings” are glue on, set aside your airplanes and let them dry.  MillerBug was so thrilled with his creation that he could hardly wait for them to dry!

Once your airplanes are dry, you’re ready to give them a home!

Picture
During the two years and one month Anne Frank spent hiding in a Secret Annex in Amsterdam during World War II, she kept a diary. Anne Frank's diary, which was published by her father after the war and has been read by millions of people around the world, chronicles both the tensions and difficulties of living in such a confined space for that long a duration as well as Anne's struggles with becoming a teenager. Since the publication of her diary, Anne Frank has become a symbol of the children that suffered during the Holocaust.

Sally Ride Lesson Plan

3/4/2014

Picture
In 1977 Sally responded to a newspaper ad that NASA was looking for astronauts. Over 8,000 people applied, but only 25 people were hired. Sally was one of them. Sally went to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas to train to become an astronaut. She had to go through all sorts of physical tests including weightlessness training, parachute jumping, and water training such as scuba and treading water in a heavy flight suit. She also had to become an expert in space travel and all the controls within the Space Shuttle.

In 1979 Sally became qualified to be an astronaut on the Space Shuttle. She was selected to be on the STS-7 mission aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. On June 18, 1983 Dr. Sally Ride made history as the first American woman in space. She worked as the mission specialist. The other members of the crew were the commander, Captain Robert L. Crippen, the pilot, Captain Frederick H. Hauck, and two other mission specialists, Colonel John M. Fabian and Dr. Norman E. Thagard. The flight lasted 147 hours and set down successfully. Sally said it was the most fun she'd ever had. In her later life Sally and her domestic partner Tam O'Shaughnessy founded a science education company called Sally Ride Science.

Here is a fun, and easy, way to make a photo frame. Cut the center out of a paper plate, leaving a short lip at the top for the top of the helmet. Then use a flag sticker, or draw your own flag, and write USA on the top. Place a large copy of the childs' photo in the frame, and tape it to the back.

It was on December 1, 1955 that Rosa made her famous stand (while sitting) on the bus. Rosa had settled in her seat on the bus after a hard days work. All the seats on the bus had filled up when a white man boarded. The bus driver told Rosa and some other African-Americans to stand up. Rosa refused. The bus driver said he would call the police. Rosa didn't move. Soon the police showed up and Rosa was arrested.

Picture
Harriet Tubman was an American bondwoman who escaped from slavery in the South to become a leading abolitionist before the American Civil War. She was born in Maryland in 1820, and successfully escaped in 1849. Yet she returned many times to rescue both family members and non-relatives from the plantation system. She led hundreds to freedom in the North as the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad, an elaborate secret network of safe houses organized for that purpose.
