Tiny Tim the Turtle
I have a little turtle;
His name is Tiny Tim.
I put him in the bathtub
To teach him how to swim.

He drank up all the water
And ate up all the soap.
Now he’s home and sick in bed
With bubbles in his throat!

Turtle Sensory Play

This is a good way to incorporate sensory play and literacy. Print out some clip art photos and have the children mold the play dough around the turtle shells and letters.

Turtle Peek-a-Boo

Turtles play peek-a-boo in their shells, waiting for you to find their sibling.

Play peek-a-boo turtle!

Read: “One Tiny Turtle”: Read and Wonder by Nicola Davies and Jane Chapman. This book is all about the turtle’s life; thirty years at sea, and returning to lay her eggs.

Materials needed:
plastic eggs, small toy (or pictures of turtles), two of each kind.
Instructions: Put pairs of turtles in the eggs. Have at least 5 pairs of turtles.
Game: Read the story, and the rhyme. Then tell the children that Penny and Paul are trying to find all their twin cousins. Two of each kind.

Let the children open one egg, then choose another to see if they can find the twin turtle. If they do not find a pair of turtles, they put them back together and try again.

Turtle Body Parts

Print out a picture of a turtle. Label the turtle. Make labels of the body parts of the turtle. Encourage the children to put the correct body part label near the body part on the turtle.

Finding Baby Turtle Game

Mamma turtles lay dozens of eggs and wait for their babies to hatch. But oh no, one baby turtle has gone missing. Help Mamma turtle find her baby with this logic memory card game!

Read: “Old Turtle” by Douglas Wood and Cheng-Khee Chee

Materials needed: 2 to 3 inch diameter pictures or stickers of turtles. 1x 2 to 3 inch picture or sticker of a baby turtle. (A photo is always better.)Construction paper for backing, contact paper, or laminate, scissors.

Cut out pictures of turtles and glue to backing. Laminate each card.

Game: (Logic) Find the Missing Baby Turtle

All of the turtles will be the same picture except for the baby turtle. Have the child guess where the baby turtle might be. It is a memory game, the child must remember which cards they turned over before finding the baby turtle.

Paper Plate Turtle

Draw a square in the middle of a plate. Add lines to the corners of the box to the edge of the plate. Write the names of colors into each area. Use green construction paper to cut out legs, a head, and a tail. Encourage each child to paint or color in each area with the correct color. Provide glue to add the head, legs, and tail.

Meeting a Snapping Turtle Story

In North Dakota when I was a little girl we had Snapping Turtles. They found their home near rivers, and lakes. One spring when I was a little girl the river overflowed and our backyard was flooded with about a foot deep. What an exciting adventure for a five year old! When my mother wasn’t looking I snuck out to see how different my backyard looked. Yes, I got in trouble!
When the water receded it left a surprise! There in the muddy grass was a huge Snapping Turtle! It was about the size of a tire. My little brothers, sister and I rushed out to meet it. My Mother rushed out to get us back into the house. Snapping Turtles SNAP!

Movement:
Say the rhyme and choose a number of bugs to eat. You could have the children pick the number, or draw a number of bugs out of a bag and set them out. Clap hands together like a turtle for the number of bugs they eat.

Turtle Rock

Take the children on a field trip outside.

Have them select rocks to create their turtles.

Paint the rocks and then add the turtle's head and legs.
