I Like Kites
Sung to: "3 Blind Mice"

I like kites, I like kites.
They fly high, they fly high.
They keep on spinning round and round,
Sometimes they even touch the ground,
They fly through the air without a sound.
Oh, I like kites!

Five Little Kites
One little kite in the sky so blue,
Along came another, then there were two.
Two little kites flying high above me;
Along came another, then there were three.
Three little kites, just watch them soar,
Along came another, then there were four.
Four little kites, so high and alive
Along came another, then there were five.
Five little kites dancing across the sky,
What a sight to see, way up so high
Let's Go Fly A Kite
From the movie "Mary Poppins"

With tuppence for paper and strings
You can have your own set of wings
With your feet on the ground
You're a bird in a flight
With your fist holding tight
To the string of your kite

Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let's go fly a kite!

When you send it flyin' up there
All at once you're lighter than air
You can dance on the breeze
Over 'ouses and trees
With your first 'olding tight
To the string of your kite

Oh, oh, oh!
Let's go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Let's go fly a kite!

Have the children tell you about their picture, write it down at the bottom of the page.

Materials Needed:
  • construction paper
  • clothespins
  • marker
  • ribbon
Directions: Cut a large kite out of one piece of construction paper.

Instructions: As the children learn a letter, attach that letter to the tail of the kite. Display the kite low enough for children to see, and use.

Extension Activity 1: Find pictures of items that match the letters. Cut them out and glue to clothespins. Put them in a basket below the kite and letters and let the children put the clothespin next to the letter.

Extension Activity 2: Have each child decorate a kite. Help them attach a 3 foot long tail out of ribbon or twine.
Cut out 2inch by 2 inch squares. Have each child write the letters on each square. Help the children glue or tape the letters to the kite. It doesn’t matter what order they are in.

Display on the bulletin board. Take pictures as children work, and display the pictures next to the child’s kite.

Provide students with cut-outs of shapes, such as parallelograms, squares, triangles, trapezoids, and  rhombus, or instruct the students to cut out these shapes. They can then glue the shapes to a piece of construction paper to make a kite flying scene.

Picture
Every great kite has a tail, include some string for the children to decorate their kite with. You can discuss what the shapes are, what color they are, or how many sides they have.
