Cut out lily pads from green construction paper. Print off little pictures of frogs Add the number of frogs should be on each lily pad. Encourage the children to add the correct number of frogs to each lily pad.

For more advanced math, add basic number problems to the lily pads.

Cut strips of paper To make a head band.

Add two green and two white circles And either add small black circles for eyes or cut eye holes.

You can also add a long red frog tongue made from construction paper.

Frog Puppet Story Telling

Many creatures live in and around a pond. Let’s tell a story of Loud Mouth Frog and who he meets!

Materials needed:

tongue depressors or pipe cleaners
pictures or small toys of flies (beetles, worms)
construction paper
glue
miscellaneous art pieces
scissors
a sheet of poster paper to write the story
marker

Read: Frogs by Gail Gibbons

Directions: Pick which insects, and other pond dwellers you would like to use.

Option 1: Print out pictures of these creatures and attach to pipe cleaners or tongue depressors.

Option 2: Make paper bag puppets of the creatures.

Instructions: After the children have their puppets, bring them to a table or circle. Tell the children they are going to help you tell a story about Loud Mouth Frog and his friends. Make sure each child has a puppet.

Start with child number one and ask one of these questions.

What is your creature going to do?
When is your creature going to go?
Who is your creature going to meet?
What will your creature do next?

Let the children tell their story and write it down on the poster paper. This connects their thoughts to the written word.

Extension: Have the children draw a picture of the story they just told. Type up the story and attach it to the back of each child’s picture.

Have the children paint a paper plate. Let the plates dry and then fold them in half. Provide art supplies and encourage the children to make their own paper plate frog.

Large Mouth Frog Phonetics

Mr. Loud Mouth frog is having a busy day,eating as many flies that come his way. But when he eats these flies,he makes a different sound for each one.

Read the book: The Icky Sticky Frog by Dawn Bentley and Salina Yoon

Materials needed:

a container such as a salt shaker
construction paper
pictures of flies (or one’s you make.)
felt marker
large wiggly eyes
paint

Instructions: Paint the salt shaker green.

Cut a hole in the top of the container big enough to insert and remove cards.

Cut out a frog face and cut it in half. Put on the top, and one on the bottom leaving space in the middle.

Cut out flies and attach to index cards. Write the letters on the back.

Have children pick a card, tell the letter name and sound. Place into the frog.

Give each child a paper plate to decorate. Help them assemble their frogs and talk to them about the life cycle of frogs.

Frog Dough

Cornstarch and conditioner with a few googly eyes. Adding equal parts to begin with adding more cornstarch or conditioner until a dough like consistency is reached.

I would suggest an apron for this activity if the little ones are more on the messy side. It is also a good time to remind them not to touch there face when they are cooking or working with other substances such as the cornstarch.

The finished product, plus a piece of a leaf because the little one wanted her frog dough to have a green tongue.

Five Green and Speckled Frogs Book

Have children cut out the frog book template to have frog shaped pages and or cover. Have children cut out or draw pictures of the frogs sitting on the log. Googly eyes make a nice addition to the frog shaped cover. The template can also be used to create a life cycles book.

Have the children write in or cut out and paste the lyrics to the song " Five Green and Speckled Frogs"
