Barn Yard: Fine Motor Frog

10/18/2013

Fine motor skills are important to a child’s development. In this exercise children practice the pinching motion.

Included at the bottom of this post is an instruction sheet on how to make “Pincher Critters” which can easily be decorated to look like any type of bird or amphibian.

The Pincher Critter in this example was decorated as a frog. The instructions were to help Mr. Frog bring bugs back to his lily pad for lunch. The lily pad was just a green circle and the bugs were fluff balls/pom poms. This exercise can also be adapted to be a chicken bringing worms to her nest, using a brown bowl or circle of paper for the nest and pipe cleaners for worms.
To print the instructions, "How to Pincher Critters" save in your pictures and print as a JPEG.

Frog Hopping Math Game

Its summer, and all the little tadpoles have lost their tales and headed for land!

Let’s see how many frogs we can collect before they hop away.

Read:
A Frog in the Bog by Karma
Wilson and Joan Rankin
Picture
Materials needed: clothespins, frog stickers, or toy frogs, green felt or construction paper for lily pads.
Picture
Directions: Glue one frog to one of the clothes pins. Make several. Cut the felt/construction paper into a round lily pad shape.
Picture
Instructions: Have the children work on a hard surface. Place the clothes pin so that the frog faces the lily pads.

Show the children how to press down on the open end and let go. The cloths pin will jump.
Let the children count how many frogs make it to the felt. This is a challenging game, and can be done with four year old children and older.

If the game is too challenging for your group here is another way to play. Have the children stand in front of a medium size basket. The child holds the frog above the basket and tries to drop it in. Not as easy as it sounds!

Create Your Own Pond

In the spring frogs sing their songs along pond, rivers, and lakes.

Here is an art project that you can add to throughout the frog’s life cycle.
Materials needed:
  • 5 ft. of poster paper
  • blue finger paint
  • green Easter basket grass
  • green, brown, and grey construction paper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • wiggly eyes

Take pictures of the children doing the different activities.

Step one Day 1: Spread the poster paper out on the floor or a long table. Put blue finger paint in small dabs around the paper. Let the children finger paint and cover the whole paper.

Step two Day 2: Lay out the dried poster paper. Give the children glue and green Easter basket grass. Let them attach the grass in any fashion.

Step three Day 3: Have the children make a frog. When dry let them attach the frog anywhere they like on the paper.

Step four Day 4: Have the children put tadpoles on the paper.

Step five Day 5: Have the children create tadpoles with tales (essentially little frogs with tales), when dry let them place them on the poster paper.

Post the completed project on the wall. Add pictures of frogs in different stages along the outside of the poster paper. Add picture of the children you took during the process.

Many creatures live in and around a pond. Let’s tell a story of Loud Mouth Frog and who he meets!
Picture
Materials needed:
  • tongue depressors or pipe cleaners
  • pictures or small toys of flies (beetles, worms)
  • construction paper
  • glue
  • miscellaneous art pieces
  • scissors
  • a sheet of poster paper to write the story
  • marker
Read: Frogs by Gail Gibbons
Picture
Picture
Directions: Pick which insects, and other pond dwellers you would like to use.

Option 1: Print out pictures of these creatures and attach to pipe cleaners or tongue depressors.

Option 2: Make paper bag puppets of the creatures.

Instructions: After the children have their puppets, bring them to a table or circle. Tell the children they are going to help you tell a story about Loud Mouth Frog and his friends. Make sure each child has a puppet.

Start with child number one and ask one of these questions.
  1. What is your creature going to do?
  2. When is your creature going to go?
  3. Who is your creature going to meet?
  4. What will your creature do next?

Let the children tell their story and write it down on the poster paper. This connects their thoughts to the written word.

Extension: Have the children draw a picture of the story they just told. Type up the story and attach it to the back of each child’s picture.
