Picture
Supplies Needed; earth tone paint (color of your choice), fresh leaves (not dried), paper, and a paint brush.

Directions;
We used a small piece of rolled tape, to affix one leaf (or two) to a piece of paper. Using an outward brushing motion, painted from the center of the leaf, to the paper. Repeat these brush strokes until you have completely covered the edges of the leaf. Then set the paper aside to dry. Once dry, carefully peel off the leaf and any remaining tape.

We decided to add a bit of glitter glue to make it sparkle.

These little trees make a beautiful addition to Thanksgiving and fall decor. We used a paper plate with different dots of finger paint as a palate, and had the kids each use their fingertips to create different colored leaves.

The template can be found below.

Take children outside to collect leaves to make their own fall tree. Bring the leaves inside and allow them to dry if they are wet. Have children cut a trunk for their tree out of brown construction paper and glue a piece a paper on the top of the trunk. Using the leaves that they collected outside, have children glue them to the piece of paper to make their very own tree.

Let’s make water bottle puppets for infants and toddlers. Older children love them too!

Read: “Fall” by Roger Priddy.

A Bright Baby touch and feel board book. A wonderful little book for infants and toddlers. But preschool children will also enjoy its photographs and the touch and feel pictures.

Materials needed:
  • water bottles of different sizes
  • pictures of trees, squirrels, leaves, pumpkins, scarecrows, etc.
  • material to fill the bottle that will make a sound when the child manipulates the bottle: rice, beans, stones, flour.
  • Use super glue to glue on the caps (We don’t want those caps coming off.)
Directions: The pictures should be big enough to cover the water bottle. The twist is that the picture will go inside the water bottle. After inserting the picture you can fill the bottles at different depths and with different materials to change the weight of the bottle.

Leafy the Last Leaf

The Last leaf is about to fall from the tree. The wind blows it here and there, let’s write a story about Leafy’s Day!

Read the book: “The Fall of Freddie the Leaf” Freddie is a leaf who changes with the coming of fall. A wonderful look at the seasons of leaves and life.
Picture
Materials needed: Construction paper, blank paper, crayons/markers, stapler, scissors, leaf cut out or stickers.

Directions: The cover: have the children make a collage of leaves. (Real leaves would be more fun, but cut out leaves will do.) Print out the “Last Leaf” poem and attach it to inside the cover.

Story: Each day have the children write (dictate to you) and draw a story about where Leafy the last leaf went, who she saw and what she did. 1 to 5 pages depending upon the interest of the children.

Instructions: Read “The Fall of Freddie the Leaf” each day. Have the children brainstorm adventures the last leaf might have. Set out the drawing/writing activity at the writing table so children who want to can work on their stories.

Extension activity: Have the children pretend they are the last leaf. Blow on them so they can gently fall to the ground.

Extension activity: When it’s time to dismiss or move the children blow them to their destination. Let them sway and move like a leaf in the wind.
