Five Red Apples
Five red apples hanging in a tree (Hold up five fingers)
The juiciest apples you ever did see.
The wind came by and gave an angry frown (Fingers flutter downward)

Read: “Rabbit and Hare Divide an Apple” by Harriet Ziefert and Emily Bolam

One day Hare tries to divide an apple in half so he and Rabbit can share it. But he breaks it unevenly. They both want the bigger piece. Will they ever find a way to share the apple?
Materials needed:
  • apples
  • knife,
  • sentence strips
  • marker

Directions: One whole apple, cut one apple in half, cut one apple in quarters.
On the sentence strips write 1 whole apple, ½ apple, ¼ apple. After teaching children about fractions, set out the strips and have the children place the correct slice on the card.

Munchy Crunchy Apples are falling from the trees!

Let’s count how many apples have fallen!

Read: Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins
Materials needed:
  • sentence strips
  • apples
  • two baskets

Directions: On the sentence strips write the numbers 1 – 10 and the word apple(s).  Put little apple stickers (or draw them) on each card according to the number written. Put them in a basket.

In another basket place 10 small apples.

Instructions: Have the child pick a card and place it on the table. Then have the child count out the correct number of apples.

Example: Point to the first card and say the name: 3. Count out the apples: 1 and 2 and 3. “Now there are three apples.”

Let’s Make an Apple Tic Tac Toe Game!

Read the Book: An Apple for Harriet Tubman by Glennette Tilley Turner.

Harriet Tubman was a slave as a child. She picked the apples in her master’s orchard, but was not allowed to eat them. When she grew up she escaped. Find out what happened!
Materials needed:
  • Large egg tray
  • several small apples (two different colors)
  • 5x7 cards for sequence cards
  • apple stickers (two colors, or draw apples on the card.)
  • laminate or construction paper to protect the cards after making.

Directions: Next time you are buying eggs, purchase the large pack. Spray the carton with bleach water or disinfectant spray. 

Wash the apples before children use them.

Instructions: Set out the egg tray, give the children equal amounts of small apples. Teach them how to play tic tac toe.

Have children cut out the side view of an apple. Next have them cut out an axial cross section of an apple (cut around the middle rather than up and down.)

Have the children paste these to a piece of construction paper. Next provide them with ink pads to put their finger prints in as the seeds. One seed for each finger. Finally children will need to wash their hands thoroughly to avoid spreading the ink.

How Do Apples Grow Story Book

Materials Needed:
Two red pieces of construction paper cut in the shape of an apple. Several pieces of white paper, stapler, crayons.

Directions: Staple the white sheets between the red apples. Each day, after you read the story, have the children draw the sequence of the growth of the apple tree, going to market, and eating them.

Cut an apple into slices leaving the core intact. Give each child several slices.

Have them collect the seeds from their slices. The slices can either be eaten or discarded after the seeds have been collected.

Next provide the children with a plastic sandwich bag and a damp napkin. Have the children place the napkin flat inside their bag. They will then need to place the seeds on top of the napkin and seal the bag. Have the children write their observations of the seed as well as draw or take a picture of the seed.

As time passes and the seed sprouts have the children keep taking notes tracking the growth of the plant. After the seed is large enough then it can be transplanted into a pot with soil.
