Supplies needed for this experiment:
·         Three pieces of construction paper        (two of any color and one black or brown)
·         Scissors
·         Glue
·         Crayons or markers


STEP #1: Fold the two pieces of construction paper
STEP #2: Draw out the butterfly wings, then cut them out
STEP #3: Take out one of the shapes then draw another butterfly wing within that, then cut it out again
STEP #4: Glue the two pieces together
STEP #5:  Make the body of the butterfly using the black or brown paper, then glue it in the center of the wings
STEP #6: Last, decorate! 

The butterfly card can be used for almost any spring holiday, for example: Mother’s Day, Easter, and birthdays! The list goes on, and children should have a lot of fun making and decorating these cards to fit any occasion.

Instructions:
  1. Make two butterflies by cutting two rectangles that are different sizes from the lace remnants. Round the corners of the rectangles.
  2. To form each butterfly’s wings, pinch and use thread to tightly tie the center of each lace rectangle.
  3. Bend a pipe cleaner over each piece of thread and shape it to look like antennae for each butterfly.


Optional: Use markers, glitter, or sequins, to decorate your butterflies.

Instructions:
  1. Cut small squares of tissue paper.

  4. Continue gluing on squares of tissue paper until the pattern is covered. Allow the glue to dry, then glue a second layer of tissue paper squares on top of the first layer.
  5. After the glue has dried, carefully lift the tissue paper butterfly from the wax paper. Trim the edges of the butterfly’s wings to make them more rounded.
  6. Attach a string to hang the stained glass butterfly from the ceiling or a curtain rod.

Literacy Project

Read:  “Where Butterflies Grow” by Joanne Ryder and Lynne Cherry
 
Let’s write a butterfly story.
Color the butterfly as you turn the pages.
 
Materials needed:
  • 1 piece construction paper
  • 3 to 4 pieces of white paper
  • crayons or markers
  • scissors
  • stapler
  • pen
Directions:
Staple all pieces together along the middle seam. Fold in half so that it opens like a book. 
When you turn the pages it should show a full butterfly shape. Color the butterfly as you turn the pages.
Have the children tell you about their picture, and write it down at the bottom.

Hand Print Butterfly Craft

Here is what you'll need:  Pipe cleaners, paint (I used finger paint), craft sticks, glue, construction paper, and paint brushes for painting hands.

1.  Have your child pick out 2 colors and paint both hands the same color.

2.  Put hands paint side down on the paper at an angle (so they resemble butterfly wings).

3.  Wash hands and paint them both the other color.

4.  Turn paper around and place hands again paint side down at the same angle...overlapping the     other hand print a little bit.

5.  Glue the craft stick in the middle of the hand prints.

6.  Cut the pipe cleaners in half and make into a "V" shape and glue onto the craft stick.

7.  Let dry and hang up!

This activity will get children moving as they chase butterflies! 
Read: Butterfly Colors and Counting by Jerry Pallotta and Shennen Bersan 

Materials needed:
  • bug net
  • small pretend butterflies
  • pipe cleaners
  • paper
  • crayons
First we catch them!
Attach each butterfly to a pipe cleaner. The butterfly at one end, attached to the butterfly at the other end. Arrange them so that it looks like the butterflies are flying just out of reach of the net. Let the children play with this inside and outside. Make several so everyone can play. They can actually catch the wiggly butterflies.

Remember to take pictures!

Have the children draw a picture about chasing butterflies. As they draw, write down their story. Display stories, pictures of children catching butterflies, the butterfly net and butterflies on the bulletin board.
